OLYMPICS 2012, NYC

Time is a child at play, playing draughts; a child’s is the kingdom.

But from the Principle of Computational Equivalence there also emerges a new kind of unity: for across a vast range of systems, from simple computer programs to brains to our whole universe, the same fundamental phenomena occur…

Somewhere within the contemporary phenomena of the smart mob (improvisational on-line communities organized along P2P networks) and the smart cloud (autopoietic environments driven by nanotechnology) this studio’s architecture imagines a future at drift, indeterminately configured by the presence of another intelligence. No longer the static manifolds of an industrial age, this century’s architecture is a smart architecture. Embedded with the technologies of a digital era, it interacts with its users, listening and responding to the virtual rhythms of their movements. It is an architecture of real-time feedback in which form and event are placed in active dialogue with one another, dissolving into an atmosphere of codes and algorithms.

As a form of entry into this cultural and technological milieu, this studio will embark upon two related abstract investigations. The first encompasses intensive experimentation with computer programming in Maya, with the ambition of generating a collaborative database of codes and algorithms for the development of dynamic and increasingly intelligent material, and by extension, architectural systems. The second incorporates detailed investigations of cultural phenomena, specifically those which exhibit similar forms of technology-augmented intelligence and as a result raise questions about conventional forms of social, and by extension, programmatic behavior. Whether one looks to new modes of political power in the formation of on-line entities like moveon.org or to the semi-illicit trading cultures of the Gnutella file-sharing network, the Internet is one example of a technology serving to provide for emerging spaces of social agency. It is the kind of agency through which the predominance of existing material power structures come into question by the increasingly rapid presence of new virtual ones.
